Finding the right place to get work done can be tough.

I worked as a freelancer for years, mostly from home in the company of my dogs. People complain a lot about office life, but you don’t really realize how nice small talk and coffee breaks are until your office is your living room and the only conversations you have are one-sided with your four-legged house guests.

That conversation and comradery is part of the appeal of coworking spaces, but they offer so much more. People who work in coworking spaces often feel healthier, more productive and more relaxed. Here’s a comprehensive list of coworking spaces around Columbus.

I’ll be the first to admit that when I heard Max & Erma’s was being replaced by a co-working space, I was skeptical.

But that’s because I didn’t understand that Kollektiv was going to be so much more than just another co-working joint. It’s unique and interesting and exciting, and quite frankly, it looks like an amazing place to set up shop.

Located at 739 S. 3rd St, the building was built in 1889 and originally served as a saloon & grocery store, with apartments on the second floor and a Social Hall on the 3rd floor. In 1958, Max & Erma bought the bar and opened their iconic restaurant. Once Max & Erma’s became a national chain, the S. 3rd St. location served as the restaurant’s headquarters.

Now, it’s the home of three exciting new businesses, including Kollektiv, Wunderbar, and Pierogi Mountain. The building has been beautifully remodeled and it retains so much of the old Max & Erma’s era charm, with memorabilia, woodwork, and even the Tiffany lamps remaining.

The remodeling process unearthed some unique treasures, including a photograph from 1891 taken in Schiller Park at the dedication of the Schiller Memorial.

On the first floor, visitors will find the “hot desks,” a sort of seat-yourself coworking area that transforms into a bar after 4 p.m.

On the second floor, there are three private offices, a print room, and a section of dedicated desks.

The third floor has three more private offices, dedicated desks, hot desks, a conference room, a private phone booth, and a comfy common area.

Perks of working at Kollektiv include high-speed wi-fi, local coffee, on-site bar, fully furnished offices, cleaning service, 24/7 building access, mail & package handling, and more. Oh, did we mention that there’s both a bar and pierogi restaurant in the building? Sounds pretty great right? You can learn more about Pierogi Mountain and Wunderbar here.

Kollektiv is also available to rent for special events, corporate meetings, and workshops.

Pricing

Hot desks starting at $150 per month
Dedicated desks starting at $350 per month
Private offices starting at $800 per month

Leases are available at Kollektiv now. Click here for more info.

Last winter, we were looking for a change.

I know, I know. We’ve haven’t been around that long, but we were on the hunt for a new view. The odds were definitely in our favor because we found the coolest spot to be: an old firetruck painting factory on our city’s south end.

We found our new home with a little help from one of Columbus’ friendliest realtors, John Mally. We trusted him enough to take a freezing cold tour of an awesome office space, that, even in it’s less than ideal condition, was giving us major Mad Men vibes.

Columbus Navigator founder James Arney and John Mally on our first visit to The Fort.

After the first tour with John, we had the pleasure of meeting Justin McAllister, fourth-generation owner and President of Fortner Fine Living & Upholstering and the nicest person in the entire world. Justin expressed a desire to breathe life back into a beautiful building and his excitement for bringing in creative tenants got us excited.

“We always believed Columbus Navigator would thrive in a maker space filled with creative energy and businesses we find inspiring. Given that wish list, the Fort was a perfect fit,” said James Arney, our founder.

I’m a Merion Village resident and I spent much of my childhood in the South End, so I was ecstatic that we would be making 2000 S. High Street our new home. The Fort is a beautiful, raw, industrial, inventive space that is being transformed into something magical. After a few months of renovations, we moved in in May.

Our office at The Fort.

Other tenants of The Fort include Menges Design, Upright Press, Hashtag Comedy, Nick Fancher, Aiden & Grace, Ghost River Furniture, Leisure Club Co., and many, many more to be announced. It’s a place where people who love to make things gather, which is exactly the kind of place we want to be.

Our very adorable office pup, Becky (with the good hair).

The best thing about working at The Fort is simple: we get to make connections, learn about what people are doing in the city, and be surrounded by stories that are waiting to tell themselves.

If you’re interested in learning more about The Fort, visit their Facebook here. For information on leasing space, reach out to John Mally here.

To see photos of just a small portion of the amazing, work-in-progress that is The Fort, keep scrolling.
